Why do modern retail and wholesale companies need to have internal checks for compliance related issues?

  • Internal systems get caught in a self-approving loop and need to be periodically reviewed for effectiveness.
  • Sourcing and buying teams need to have accurate and up-to-date information for regulatory, social and other compliance-related issues.

Why should you be concerned about Lacey Act violations?

  • Lumber Liquidators and Gibson Guitars both had compliance with Lacey Act as part of their supplier requirements but still faced major litigation.
  • Suppliers cannot always be depended onto fully understand or even be able to comply with the Lacey Act.

What is Sarbanes Oxley Conflict Minerals Rule?

  • No retailer or wholesaler has been pursued as of yet for violation of Sarbanes Oxley Conflict minerals, but it is only a matter of time.

  • If you did not design the item and specify the materials, you must know where the materials were sourced from in production of your product.

I do not directly import from China or other countries, what does this mean to me?
  • Even though you are not a direct importer, if your name is on the product "social justice" campaigns have and will be fought over supplier compliance or other social issues that negatively affected many major names in the industry.
